PRESS RELEASE:

BELLWETHER GALLERY is pleased to present KNOWING WHEN TO STOP, an exhibition of non-literal, gestural paintings curated by Patrick Callery. The artists included are Shoshana Dentz, Jacqueline Humphries, Dorota Kolodziejczyk and Eduoard Prulhiere. The show begins with an opening reception on Friday, May 31 and continues through July 1.

The title of the exhibition comes from a response to a question posed to Jackson Pollack. Asked how he knew when a painting was complete, he said "How do you know when you are finished making love"? (We can only assume or hope he actually used an expletive).

In this show, Shoshana Dentz exhibits paintings using a complex palette of reds and yellows in an idiosyncratic geometry. This spring, she had a one-person show at Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery and will exhibit at Bard College this summer.

Jacqueline Humphries is a widely recognized figure in the genre of new abstract painting. She is known for her loosely gestural, linear hand and innovative color sense. Her works are in many museum collections. She has also been awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She is represented by Greene Naftali Gallery.

Dorota Kolodziejczyk creates spill paintings, the paint poured lengthwise, then hung horizontally, subtlely referencing landscapes. The quick pours and organic flow of action painting is offset by meticulously applied accents that create curious visual reverberations. She has most recently shown at Joseph Helman Gallery.

Eduoard Prulhiere considers the two sculptures in this show "standing paintings". The application of paint and twisted sculptural form epitomize the never-ending attraction and debate over abstract art.
