PRESS RELEASE:

BELLWETHER is proud to present DIANA KINGSLEY Lovely swallowed whole

Diana Kingsley finds humor and sadness in our failed attempts to bring harmony and order to our environments, when our high ambitions succumb to inevitable collapse. She focuses on the most prosaic objects and situations, which could be anything from a carefully arranged tabletop centerpiece, to a man in a natty blazer draping himself coolly across the cushions of a couch. Her photographs capture the delicate moments when these controlled scenarios start to break down, when harmony is confounded by dysfunction.

In Diane the cheery self-confidence of a nametag atop a proud and mountainous breast is undone by a simple spray of seltzer, smearing ink on the still clueless owner. In Lovely swallowed whole the decadence of a luscious chocolate-covered strawberry is taken to an unpalatable extreme, as it is entirely soaked in chocolate, stem and leaves included. Although the subject matter varies, a coherent sensibility emerges wherein disquiet is always a close cousin of control, and human frailty and vulnerability is reflected in the most disparate of things.

Diana Kingsley holds degrees from Colgate University and SVA. She has shown extensively in Europe and the States including recent solo shows at kmkk in Budapest, Derek Eller in NYC, Ruimte Voor Aanvallen Van Het Uiterste in Gent and Gallerie Christa Burger in Munich. She lives and works in New York City.

BELLWETHER is an artist-run space in support of emerging artists.
